PROGRAM
11:30am – 12:20pm
Trace: The Art of Absence In Latin America
Dr. Cristina Cruz González ’94 is an Associate Professor of Art History at Oklahoma State University. She completed her undergraduate degree from Yale (Hopper) and received her PhD in art history from the University of Chicago. A specialist in the visual culture of Latin America, she has curated exhibitions on pre-Columbian art and has published widely on the viceregal arts of Mexico and South America. A recent theoretical interest is the subject of trauma-as-trace in visual culture. Her talk will consider spectrality, and the space between presence and absence in Latin American art.

12:30 – 1:30pm
Luncheon: The Art of Collecting
There are various strategies on collecting art. Are you a major investor in need of a seasoned art consult? Perhaps you are a weekend browser with a desire to seriously develop a collection. Moderated by Nicholas Roman Lewis ’93, hear from the experts on current art market trends and insights to begin and expand your personal and private art collections.

1:45 – 2:45pm
Perspective: Artists at Work
Beyond labels and titles, these artists are dynamic voices in the Art World. Hear what it really means to work as an artist today in this intimate conversation moderated by designer Miko McGinty ’93, ’98 MFA.

  • David Antonio Cruz 09' MFA, Artist
  • Alteronce Gumby ’06MFA, Artist
  • Ilana Harris-Babou '13, Artist

2:45 – 3:30pm
Pamela Lee
Pamela M. Lee ’88 is the Carnegie Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art at Yale University and teaches the history, theory and criticism of late modernism and contemporary art with research interests in the relationship between aesthetics, politics, time and system. Her courses include lectures and seminars on Abstract Expressionism; the art of the 1960s; contemporary art and globalization; intergenerational and intersectional feminism; methods and historiography; art and technology; modernism and war; and media cultures of the Cold War.

3:45 – 4:45pm
In Conversation with Tavares Strachan ’06 MFA
Throughout his career, Tavares Strachan has engineered a multidisciplinary artistic practice that mobilizes our visual, intellectual, and emotional faculties. Aeronautical and astronomical science, deep-sea exploration, and extreme climatology are but some of the thematic arenas out of which Strachan creates monumental performative allegories that tell of cultural displacement, human aspiration, and mortal limitation. Strachan’s artistic practice and methodology often circumvents expected narratives, functioning in a more unconventional framework.

4:45 – 6:00pm
Networking Cocktail Reception
Mix and mingle with alumni and friends in the heart of South Beach!
